Project Description
Ballard CLC, Inc. was asked to respond when a natural disaster occurred in Greensburg, KS. On May 31, 2007, just days following the disastrous F-5 tornado that devastated the Town of Greensburg Ballard was asked to design a site for the installation of 298 temporary housing units.
This was a Design-Build project executed by Sealaska Constructors’ environmental group, Kingston Environmental Services, Inc. as a subcontractor for CH2M Hill, who was contracted to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Ballard prepared all design documents, on‐site, for the project including site survey, site planning and project location, grading, erosion control, utilities, concrete pads, streets, sidewalks, ramps, electrical and power distribution, sewers, plumbing and water services. Project development included locating pads, planning for construction and installation of mobile homes, tornado shelters, laundry facilities and other community improvements.
Design staff and one fully outfitted GPS survey crew mobilized to Central Kansas and provided full design and construction layout of a temporary housing community consisting of more than 2 miles of paved streets; utilities (fire protection, water, buried electrical, sewer, cable, phone service); new permanent electrical substation; and drainage improvements both on and off-site. Ballard completed the entire design package by June 21st and the project substantially complete and ready for occupancy on July 5th. Asphalt paving of all streets and concrete sidewalks was completed by mid-August 2007, providing temporary housing for the Town of Greensburg and its 1200 residents.
